OP09 Purple (Luffy) Deck Profile

OP05 Luffy Leader got a major upgrade from the OP09 set more than the new Nika Luffy Leader they've made. With this build we can focus entirely on the Straw Hats. Well it depends on what kind of build you want with this Luffy Leader I am mainly using ST18 as the base of the deck. For anyone who bought ST18 starter deck, the upgrades will be very simple to go from there.

OP09 Luffy

How it Works?

The OP09 Straw Hat gives us the option to return 1 DON or more than 1 DON from your field. We can easily get those DONs back with the ramp, but it can also help to trigger some effects. As you can see for this build, I mainly focused heavily on the Straw Hat as the based of the deck, so searching for Straw Hat isn't difficult at all. We also got plenty of 2k counters so defence is not a problem, and even if we don't have enough counters, we have some Blockers to stop your opponent's attacks. This build has the perfect balance of defence and attack, plus we also got ramp, allowing you to play your high cost Characters as soon as possible.

What you want to do is to use counter early as we want to trigger Luffy's Leader effect as much as possible until we can reach 10 DONs. Luffy will take your Life cards away so no point taking the hit unless you don't have anything to use. Once we've reach 8 to 10 DONs, you can freely take the hit, but before that, it will mainly be about defending as much as possible.

Ramp

Most of the ramping will be from Luffy's Leader effect which is why I am not running a lot of ramp cards in the build. EB01 Bon Clay have 2 effects, the first effect works on play, add 1 DON as active, very simple. The second effect works when attacking, select 1 of your opponent's Characters. This Character base power becomes the same as the selected Character. So the higher the power, the better for Bon Clay to become a deadly beat stick.

OP05 Kid is very useful for this build as we will be returning DONs from our field, and Kid can make use of that by giving us 1 active DON. Kid is also a Blocker, so if you don't need the effect, you can use the Blocker ability to stop your opponent's attacks. The effect is when a DON on your field is returned to DON deck, add 1 DON as active. The 1 extra DON we could use for Giant or use to power up our cards dependig on the situation of the field.

Draw

What I like about these cards is that they actually give us draw power and not filtering the hand. ST18 Onami is a Blocker that need 8 or more DONs to work trigger the effect. The only downside is that she is only a 2k Blocker considering the requirements to trigger the effect. The effect works on play, if you have 8 or more DONs on your field, trash 1 card from your hand and draw 2 cards.

ST18 Sangoro is a card that works when attacking, if you have 8 or more DONs, draw a card. This is our main draw power as the other cards only has an 1 off effect whilst we can use Sangoro as much as possible as long as he is on the field. Of course the effect only works once per turn, but if we can get multiple Sangoro, we could get like 2 cards per turn without including other cards.

OP09 Luffy is another card where we can get draw power, but we also get an additional ability. The effect works on play, you may return 1 or more DONs on your field. Draw 1 card and this Character gains Rush this turn. This Character also gains Rush, and being a Straw Hat on top means we could use this as Kaido replacement.

Giant is the only Event in the build, we got a card who can search it out because of being a Straw Hat card. You can get 1 active DON easily with this build, so instead of using that DON to power up your Character, you can use this for the counter stage. The counter effect is by returning 2 DONs from your field, you may trash 1 card from your hand, if your Leader is Straw Hat type, your Leader or 1 of your Character cards gains 4k power this battle. Then, draw 2 cards. So this is just like Onami where we need to trash first in order to draw cards.

Searchers

What I like about this deck is also the access of searchers, and we've got 2 searchers to search for Straw Hat. This way we can get a decent hand size combined with our draw power. OP09 Law is the best turn 1 searcher for your opening move. The effect works on play, look at top 4 cards of your deck, reveal one 2 cost or more Straw Hat or Heart Pirates card and add it to your hand. Then, place the rest at the bottom of your deck in any order. I am also running ST10 Law as the other Heart Pirates card so we can have some options.

ST18 Zorojuro can search for any Straw Hat cards as long as they are purple unlike Law who has a cost requirements. The effect works on play, look at the top 5 cards of your deck, reveal 1 purple Straw Hat card and add it to your hand. Then, place the rest at the bottom of your deck in any order. If you want to search for Giant, then Zorojuro will be the one who will search that card from your deck.

Resting

Resting is very helpful, especially when your opponents has Blockers on the field, we could go for the final push to finish them off on that turn with these cards. ST18 Usohachi will need 8 DONs on the field for the effect to work. The effect works on play, if you have 8 or more DONs on your field, rest 1 of your opponent's 5 cost or less Characters. Even if you don't need to play Usohachi, the 2k counter will be very handy to protect Luffy Leader from your opponent's attacks.

OP09 Sanji is another Character that has counter even though he cost 7 to play. The effect works on play, you may return 1 or more DONs on your field. This Character gains Rush and rest 1 of your opponent's 6 cost or less Characters. So not only we can rest your opponent's Characters, but the Rush ability will allow us to attack straight away.

Straw Hat Supports

Now for the rest of the Straw Hat supports, they are very simple. OP09 Robin and OP07 Sanji are Blockers, except Sanji has an additional effect that works in your hand. If the number of DONs is at least 2 less than your opponent's field, reduce this cost by 3. The OP09 Straw Hat can let us return more than 1 DONs from your field, easy reducing OP07 Sanji to 3. More important we also have 2k counter on this card which helps to protect Luffy Leader from attacks.

Luffytaro only works specifically in purple Straw Hat builds and not other colours. The effect works on play, by returning 1 DON, you may play 1 purple 5 cost or less Straw Hat Character from your hand. Now this effect let us play any of the 5 cost or less Straw Hat Characters depending on the number of DONs and the situation of the field. But at least we could get 2 big drop Characters in one turn for 7 DONs.

Removals

Now for the non Straw Hat, we have the removal cards whether we can target your opponent's hand or on the field. ST10 Law is a Blocker with an effect that depends on your opponent's hand size. The effect works on play, by returning 1 DON, if your opponent have 7 or more cards in their hand, trash 2 cards from your opponent's hand. We could play Law early than most of the Straw Hat Blockers in this build.

I'm mainly using OP06 Kamazo for the 2k counter as he is a 5k beat stick as well. Just like OP05 Kid, the effect only triggers when we return a DON on our field back to DON deck. The effect is when a DON is returned to your DON deck, KO up to 1 of your opponent's 2 cost or less Characters. This might be difficult to trigger which is why I am mainly using Kamazo for the 2k counter, but can be a 5k beat stick as back up if I've got nothing to play.

OP08 Big Mom is very useful combined with Luffy's Leader effect. Luffy Leader add cards from Life area to our hand, reducing the Life number, and making us needing to use counter early if we want to use Luffy's Leader effect. However, with OP08 Big Mom, we have a Life gain ability allowing us not to worry too much about Life cards. The effect works on play, by returning 1 DON and trashing 1 card from your hand. Add the top card of your deck to top of your Life. Then, add 1 of your opponent's 6 cost or less Characters to their top or bottom of the Life area face up. Well, I guess we can class this as a removal as we do remove your opponent's Characters, but not permanently.
