How to play One Piece Card Game in 2024

I should have posted this first before the One Piece Deck Profiles, but I guess it is better late than never. Anyway, One Piece is very basic compare to Digimon card game, there's not as much keywords involved, so we don't need to remember those keywords like Digimon. I might only update this when One Piece decided to add new stuff like colours or new keywords, otherwise I can keep it at is it unlike Digimon Card Game which I know I will to update the rules every year.

Card Types

There are 5 different types of cards you can get in One Piece, and these are:

  • Leader - The main card who will need to be placed in your Leader area. Only 1 copy allowed per deck.
  • Characters  - The Characters who will be your main attacking force to deal damage to your opponent's Leaders.
  • Events - These cards can act like spell cards in Magic, where we have main effects and counter effects. They mainly have manga art style on these cards.
  • Stage - We can only have 1 Stage card on the field, but unlike Events, we can use these cards once per turn as most of them need to rest to trigger effects. However, there are some exceptions to Stage cards.
  • DON!! - The main resources to play your cards. This is just like Force of Will (if you have played that game) where these resources will be the mana.

Colours

There are a total of 6 colours in the game currently, and each colours represent different style of the deck. You can only allow the same colour of cards based on your Leader, so you can't use other colours that are not related to the colour of your Leader. To find the deck suitable for you will be based on these colours and what the deck does.

  • Red - As always they focus on being aggressive utilising keywords like Rush so they can attack as soon as possible. But there are other styles like reducing your opponent's Characters power so we can KO those cards with ease. There's also power where we utilise rested DONs to power up the cards to swing for more power.
  • Green - They focused on resting your opponent's cards as well as preventing those cards from attacking, stalling for turns to set up the field. Not to mention, they can untap cards as well to create another attack, or untapping DONs to play more cards. There are also a lot of prevention cards where if certain cards are on the field, it will save your other cards from getting removed.
  • Blue - Focused on returning cards back to deck or back to hand, having the draw power to increase hand size, also checking the top cards of your deck to arrange the order so you could get the card you want. I think I've covered most of this for Blue as it is very simple style.
  • Purple - Focused on ramp so you can play your high cost Characters as soon as possible, and some builds return DONs back to deck when you used their effects. There are also a lot of KO effects in this colour, so you would be able to access a lot of removals if you want to constantly remove your opponent's board. There's also draw power too just like Blue to increase your hand size.
  • Black - Has one of the most basic style where they focused on reducing your opponent's Characters cost to KO those Characters. However, they are changing with increasing your Characters cost too. There are also self mill decks where you mill your own deck to trigger some card's effect and make use of the trash area.
  • Yellow - Just like Digimon, yellow focused on the Life area where you gain Life cards so you won't lose as easily. But not only Life gain abilities, you will also be trashing your own Life to trigger certain card effects. It is also the colour where you have a lot of Trigger effects and trigger effects will trigger in your Life area.

Multicoloured

The multicoloured rules is very different to Digimon as currently, we've only got multicoloured Leaders to play 2 colour builds. There are a lot of multicoloured Leaders in these game, and I just use these 3 as an example. Each of these colours will be mixing the base colour's style, so you can have both style instead of just one colour. The only downside to these multicoloured Leaders is that they start with 4 Life compare to mono coloured Leader who starts with 5. There are some exception as some start with 5, same with mono coloured Leader with some start with more or less depending on the deck style.

Deck Building

A deck should consist of 1 Leader, 50 cards deck and 10 DONs all in separate pile. These cards can be recognised by the card back, Leader cards have Red card back, cards go in main deck have Navy Blue card back whilst DON cards have White card back. The 50 card decks will be a mix of Characters, Events and Stage cards and you can only allow up to 4 copies of the same card number, anymore than that will be illegal.

Setting up The Game

Win Conditions

There are 2 ways to win in this game either attack your opponent's Leader when they have 0 Life remaining or your opponent's run out of cards in their deck. As soon as the deck hit 0, all the effects will be cancelled. However, there is a deck who does the opposite when they hit 0 cards in their deck.

Active and Resting

Characters and Stages that comes into play will come in active unless the card text says otherwise. When you attack or block, those cards will become rested. Another thing that will need to rest will be DON cards

Dons are used to pay the cost of cards, for instance to play Usopp, it will cost you 2 DONs to play, so we need to rest 2 DONs in order to play that card.

Game Flow

Refresh Phase

This is where we untap everything and all the DON cards attached to cards returns to the cost area as active.

Draw Phase

This is where we draw 1 card from deck, however, the player going first do not draw on their first turn.

DON Phase

Every turn, we get 2 DON cards that are placed from your DON deck to cost area as active. If you only have 1 DON left in your DON deck, then place that card to cost area as active. However, just like draw phase, the player going first can only place 1 DON card to their cost area as active.

Main Phase

This is where we can perform certain actions during the main phase. This can be done in any order and as many time as you wish.

  • We could play cards from our hand by paying the cost, includes Characters, Stages and Events.
  • We could activate card effects.
  • Attach DONs to cards, but they must be active DONs to work unless you've got card's effect that can use rested DONs.
  • Lastly we go into battle. However, I would recommend going into battle first to see if you run into any trigger effects that could remove your Characters, before playing your Characters.

End Phase

Any end of your turn effects will active and resolve before your turn actually ends and pass to your opponent's turn.

Battle Flow

There are several steps involve when you battle and these are:

  • Attack Declaration - To attack, we first need to rest the active Leader or Character you want to attack with and choose the target of your attack. You can either attack your opponent's Leader or your opponent's rested Characters on the field. Any when attacking effects will be activated at the stage.
  • Blocking - The player being attacked can activate Blocker abilities, but they must be active to do so.
  • Counter Step - This is where you can activate counter as many times as you like by either trashing a Character with Counter to increase the power of your Leader or Characters or use an event card with Counter from your hand to activate the effect.
  • Damage Step - Compare the power of the attacking and defending cards. The attacker will win if the power is greater than or equal to the power of the card it is attacking leading to one of the following results.
    • When the opponent's Leader is attacked, the Leader takes a damage. When the Leader is damaged, they would check the content of the top card of the Life area, if that card has a Trigger effect, they could activate the Trigger effect instead of adding the card to hand. Trigger effects are optional, so they could be placed into the hand.
    • When the opponent's Character is attacked, that Character would be KO'd.
  • End of Battle - Any effects that can activate at the end of the battle will be activated at this point.
