Mihawk doesn't have a huge update from OP15 set as the new green support doesn't really work well with Mihawk. Although, the deck did go through a major rebuild compare to my previous build, as this time, I will be using the Supernovas engine mainly as the base of the deck instead of going for 2 builds.
OP15 Mihawk |
|---|
Leader Character (39) Event (9) Stage (2) |
How it Works?
This is a build where you really want to cramp as much as possible, only some cards run max copies, the rest is either 2-3 copies in a deck as we really want the effects as well as the engine, since I've combined both Slash and SN type together.
Mihawk pretty much relies on your Events because once we use Mihawk's effect, we will be locked from playing Characters, and we don't really have much Characters who can be played from using effects in hand to bypass Mihawk's effect. We also have other Characters who can reduce your opponent's from attacking using their effects. The more attacks you can stop, the easier to get your high drop Characters to the field and put a threat against your opponents.
Freeze/Lock
I don't know about you, but I do like playing decks where we can annoy your opponent as much as possible, so they can't attack if they play their Characters. Beside the Events, we do have these Characters to pull the freeze/lock mechanic. OP14 Perona is very good, especially when you can also target this card with Mihawk's effect as we want this card to get KO'd. Perona has 2 effects, the first effect works on play, up to 2 of your opponent's 5 cost or less Characters cannot be rested until the end of your opponent's turn. You can only target 5 cost or less, so pretty much stop the early attacks. The second effect will work very well with Mihawk as the effect works on KO, you may rest 1 of your cards to play 1 green 5 cost or less Character from your hand. Perona will get summon sickness if we play her, so you can rest her straight away and aim for the on KO effect so we could get a new Character on the field.
OP07 Bonney works very well with our SN searchers as we can search this card out easily from the deck. The effect works on play, 1 of your opponent's rested Characters or DONs cannot become active during your opponent's next Refresh Phase. The best thing about Bonney is that we can target any cards we want as long as that card is rested whilst Perona can focus on the low cost Characters.
OP14 Mihawk is another card that can work well with the Leader when we have summon sickness. Mihawk has 2 effects, the first effect works during your turn, when this Character becomes rested, 1 of your opponent's 9 cost or less cannot be rested until the end of your opponent's turn. What I also liked about this effect is that this will also works when we attack with this card, stopping 1 of your opponent's Characters once per turn. The second effect works during your opponent's attacks, once per turn, you may trash 1 card from your hand, your Leader or 1 of your Characters gains 2k power for the battle. This can act like 1 of those Event counters, but we do have to discard a card for the effect to work.
Law & Bepo is another card like Bonney where we can search this card out with our SN searchers, but we also have Slash attribute, so Perona searcher can also target this card. The effect works on play, rest 1 of your opponent's Characters and that Character cannot become active during your opponent's next Refresh Phase. Then, if your opponent has 2 or more rested Characters, your Leader gains 2k power until the end of your opponent's turn. If your opponent has 2 or more rested Characters, that would be even better as it boost our Leader base power up.
Untapping
Mihawk Leader is not the only card who can untap our DONs, as these cards can also untap our DONs, making the use of our Events. OP12 Bonney will only works if we a few rested cards on the field if you want to trigger the full effect. Not only that, Bonney is a 6k Blocker we can use to stop your opponent's attacks. The effect works on play, if you have 8 or more rested cards, draw 2 cards and trash 1 card from your hand. Then, untap 1 DON. The draw power is definitely useful to filter out our hand, especially if we get too much non counters.
OP10 Smoker is a Slash Character, and I did not even realised this because Smoker's weapon jutte is not really a Slash weapon, it is more of a blunt weapon. Anyway, I guess we can search this card with Perona searcher as well as the effect can work well with our Leader. Smoker also has Banish which can put a bit of pressure if your opponent focuses on trigger effects. The effect is an activate main, untap 1 of your DON. Then, you cannot untap DONs with your Character's effects. Combined this with Mihawk, we can untap 4 DONs in a turn, but it does means locking out playing Characters, so I guess you want to play a Character first before using the Leader's effect.
Coffin Boat is definitely 1 of the cards we want to target with the Leader's effect as this card doesn't need to rest when we use the effect. Coffin Boat has 2 effects, the first effect works on play, if your Leader is Mihawk, draw 1 card. Nothing special about this effect aside from drawing. But what we do want is the second effect which works at the end of your turn. If your Leader is Mihawk, untap 1 of your DONs. This will enable us to play some Events during your opponent's turn.
Prevention
Both of these cards can help to prevent your opponents from targeting your cards and both also have 2k counter. OP15 Laboon is the only new card I've decided to add from the OP15 set, and being a low cost means it's a lot better than needing 3 DONs to play OP10 Tashigi. The effect is if your 7k base power or less Characters would be removed by your opponent's effects, you may rest 2 of your cards instead. This could work well in this build as we will be doing a lot of untapping, as well as we can target any cards.
PRB02 Zoro can be the target with our Perona searcher and SN searcher which is very useful, and also a 4k Blocker to stop your opponent's attacks. The effect works during your opponent's turn, if this Character is rested by your opponent's effects, you may rest 1 of your Characters instead. Unfortunately, this is a very specific effect and only works against rest effects.
Searchers
For this build, since we have 2 different engine, we can run these searchers to add specific card to our hand. OP12 Perona will be the best 1 DON searcher we've got in the build. The effect works, on play, if your Leader have the Slash attribute, look at top 5 cards of your deck, reveal up to 1 Slash attribute Character or 1 green Event and add it to your hand. Then, place the rest at the bottom of your deck in any order. Not only, we can look for Slash Characters, but we can also add Events to our hand, if we need specific Events when we untap the DONs.
ST02 Bonney did not make it to the exception in the rotation list, so she is treated as a Block 4 card I think, which there are plenty of time. The effect is an activate main, by paying 1 DON and resting this Character, look at the top 5 cards of your deck, reveal 1 SN card and add it to your hand. Then, place the rest at the bottom of your deck in any order. Being a 1k power Character, this card can easily be an attack target to stop you from gaining cards from your hand.
ST24 Kid and Killer has a Slash attribute, so OP12 Perona can easily search into this card, and we can use this card to search for SN cards. Kid & Killer has 2 effects, the first effect works on play, look at the top 5 cards of your deck, reveal 1 SN card and add it to your hand. Then, place the rest at the bottom of your deck in any order. The second effect works during your opponent's attack, you may trash this Character to untap 1 DON. The second effect will allow us to have more DONs to use as well as clearing up the field for better beat sticks.
Supernovas Supports
With the SN searchers, we can easily search for these 2 cards. EB01 Apoo is mainly for the 2k counter as well as being a fodder for Mihawk's effect, since this card only cost 1 to play. The effect works on play, rest 1 of your opponent's 2 cost or less Characters. The effect will be very difficult to use as we can only target 2 or less which doesn't really happens most of the time.
OP13 Law having Slash attribute and SN type means all of our searchers can search this card out from deck easily. Law has 2 effects, the first effect is if you have 1 or less Life cards, this Character gains Blocker. You don't have to aim for the first effect as we really want to use the on play effect which is you may return 1 of your Characters to the owner's hand to play one 5 cost or less Characters from your hand rested. There are plenty of 5 cost or less Characters we can play, but of course, you don't want to target cards who have the Blocker ability.
Events
As for the Events, I am mainly running cards that can stop your opponent's Characters, and 3 of them is pretty much the same as the previous version, where the other made a slight change. I'll Go All Out is one of the main Event you want for this build as the main effect is very useful. The main effect is you may rest 2 DONs, 2 of your opponent's rested 7 cost or less Characters will not become active during your opponent's next Refresh Phase. This will cost 3 altogether in order to stop 2 of your opponent's beat sticks. The counter effect is your Leader gains 3k power for the turn.
Dead Man's Game is just a cheaper version of Hody if you are aiming for the main effect, and we don't really have many rest effect for this build. It is mainly stopping your opponent's Characters from attacking. The main effect is you may rest 3 DONs to rest up to total of 2 of your opponent's Characters or DONs. The counter effect is your Leader gains 3k power for the battle.
Trichiliocosm is the only Event that focused on the counter effect compare to our other cards who can be used during the main phase. The counter effect is your Leader or 1 of your Characters gains 2k power for the battle. Then, if you have 8 or more rested cards, that card gains another 2k power, making the grand total of 4k for 1 cost. This shouldn't be difficult to do compare to OP12 Bonney as we would most likely to play as much as possible before passing to your opponent's turn. The trigger effect is KO 1 of your opponent's 3 or less rested Characters. Honestly, I would rather focus on the counter effect, unless the trigger effect is needed.
Electrical Luna is a card that can mainly stop your opponent's board, especially if that deck is designed to be aggressive. The main effect is all of your opponent's rested 7 cost or less Characters will not become active during your opponent's next Refresh Phase. If there's only 1 or 2 Characters, we can use I'll Go All Out Event, but if there are more than 2, then, we need to use Luna. The trigger effect is rest 1 of your opponent's Characters. This would require luck to stop your opponent's attacks at the right time.
